This week I noticed how much my daughter (1-year-old) LOVES putting objects into boxes. So we made a DIY color matching activity to help her start to recognize her colors. Not only did she love it, but my 3-year-old who is a color pro loved it!
We love making toys and activities from boxes and recycled items. Because of covid, we’ve been buying online more often than before, so we end up with tons of boxes! What better to do with those boxes than transform them into something fun?!

Here’s what you’ll need:
- Small Box (should be able to open and close) I used a KiwiCo subscription box for this
- X-acto knife
- Acrylic Paint Pens
- Pom Poms
First, if your box is not plain on the outside, you’ll need to open the box and rebuild it inside out (see video).
Next, count how many different colors of pom poms you have and draw that many circles on the box. I had six colors, so I drew six circles.
Use an x-acto knife to cut out the circles. I like to use every part of the craft, even the scraps to reduce waste so I just set these aside for later.
After this, you can start painting the outline of the circles according to the color pom poms you have. I used these acrylic paint marker pens but you can use anything you want. Regular paint, markers or crayons will also work. I love these paint markers because they show up so well on the cardboard and the colors are so vibrant!
Here is where you can use those extra circles we cut out for decoration! We painted the circles and glued them onto the front to make it look extra cute and even added a title. I LOVE how it turned out.
Let your little one enjoy and have fun learning their colors!
