Summer is here and we are so excited to create summer-themed crafts and activities! To kick off our summer learning, we made this DIY cardboard bird craft!
One of our favourite parts of summer is hearing all the beautiful birds chirping and enjoying the weather. So, this Blue Bird craft was perfect for our Letter B preschool unit. My son had such a fun time making it and I know your child will too!
If you are like me, you’ve been doing a lot of your shopping online and have tons of boxes laying around. Because of this, we have lots of materials for arts and crafts! We love to take those boxes and turn them into fun crafts and activities!

To make this DIY cardboard bird craft you’ll need:
- X acto knife
- googley eyes
- paint or crayons
First, you’ll want to start by outlining a bird’s body and the wings on a piece of cardboard.
The outlines should look like this:
Keep in mind that the bird’s body needs to have a slit down the middle that is the width and height of the wings to fit the pieces together.
Next, cut the outlines out using an x acto knife. You can use scissors as well but it may be harder to get a precise cut.
After this, you can get your child to start painting the bird. We used blue paint because we were focusing on the letter B, but you can paint the bird whatever color you like.
Once the birds body and wings at reprinted and dried, you can add some google eyes. We also added some blue glitter.
Finally, slide the wings into the slit on the birds body and there you have it! In case the wings won’t stay in place, use some hot glue to keep them together.
