This summer has been so hot and beautiful, so we’ve been trying to spend as much time outside as possible. This citrus volcano sensory play activity was perfect for our outdoor play.
Not only was this activity fun but it was also cheap and easy to put together.
Here’s what you’ll need:
Before we get down to how to assemble this awesome citrus volcano sensory play, can I just say how much I love this sensory table? This table can be used as a water table, a Lego table, a regular table for drawing, eating or crafts and storage.
Citrus Volcano Sensory Play
To start, cut your citrus in half.
To make the halves stand on their own and not wobble around, I also cut the bottoms so they would be flat on the surface.
With a fork, break open the surface of each citrus fruit just enough to pour some dish liquid inside.
After this, add some food colouring on top of your citrus for extra fun! We used multiple colours to make a rainbow!
Next, place the fruits onto a tray or in a sensory bin. Once they have been placed, pour baking soda over each fruit.
Now comes the fun part! Fill a spray bottle or squeeze bottle with white vinegar and have your child spray the baking soda.
Your sensory table should look a little like this:
Your kids will love seeing all the colours swirl around in the bin.
Once the baking soda runs out, add more for more fun!
Behind Baking Soda and Vinegar
Baking soda and vinegar react with each other because of an acid-base reaction. Together, baking soda, which is bicarbonate, and vinegar, which is acetic acid, create carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide is what produces the bubbles we see when the reaction takes place.
With the added soap, the carbon dioxide will actually blow bubbles into it creating bigger bubbles!
I hope your kids have fun doing this fizzy rainbow science experiment!
